Have you ever tried to find someplace quiet in Key West? I mean really quiet where you can get a drink and record a podcast? It can be harder than you think. We recorded at one of our favorite hangouts, 2 Cents. There were patrons at the bar that were having a really good time, and we don’t begrudge anyone a good time in Key West, but their laughter often interrupts the podcast. Lucy is great, and we are really excited about her new book. I think you’ll enjoy this podcast, if you can be forgiving of the ambient noise. At least I can sincerely say that this is the most laugh filled podcast we’ve done.
Mariel Hemingway – promoting Running from Crazy
This week I got to talk to some of the filmmakers from this year’s Key West Film Festival. David Carroll is the Director of the movie Bending Steel. He tells the story of discovering an introverted person who would bend steel in secret.
Mariel Hemingway was lovely and generous with her time. She is promoting her new movie Running from Crazy about her family’s legacy of secrets.
This week we talk to Dr. Mac about Eastern medicine. He shares his training and experience with healing through cupping, herbs, and acupuncture. Monique and I get poked with needles!
This week we talk to Carlton Grooms from Papa’s Pilar Rum. Carlton is in charge of bringing a new Rum distillery to Key West. Not only did we get to taste samples of the new rum, we talked about the intricate multi-year process that goes into making each bottle. We discuss Pilar’s inspiration, which is Ernest Hemingway’s sense of adventure – they even named the rum after Hemingway’s boat! Carlton promises us a tour when the distillery is open, and plan on keeping him to his word.
Utility board candidate Tim Root joins us to discuss Keys Energy’s strengths and weaknesses, and what may be in the future for our island’s utility.
This week we talk to Kim Gabel at the University of Florida Extension services. Kim is a great resource for all things flora and fauna in the keys. She does regular plant clinics, and will help identify garden pests, all for free! Check out her blog at http://www.floridakeyslandscapeadvisor.com/.
This week we talk to Jason Wolf from Mote Marine about Spiny Lobster Mini Season and how to enjoy it responsibly. We also catch up on the coral restoration project which is exceeding all expectations!
